The Former President's Progressive Warning Misses Europe's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy offers a flawed assessment of Europe. The document asserts that unrestrained immigration and so-called "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to European civilization. Yet, this argument is based on a serious misinterpretation of the reality. The actual challenge facing Europe is not societal but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Divide Between Europe and the US

The data paint a stark picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by 87%, compared to a paltry thirteen and a half percent increase for the EU. Over this period, EU GDP per capita dropped from 76.5% to just half of the US level. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading EU nations like Italy and France.

Today, about 50% of the global top fifty tech companies are American, while a mere four are from Europe.

The Technological Deficit: The Core Problem

This widening disparity stems from superior productivity growth in the United States, fueled by technological innovation and better use of resources. The scene of global tech leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last fifty years, 241 US firms have grown into enterprises valued at more than $10bn, versus just 14 in the European continent.

This gap raises a pressing question: As the competition for tomorrow's sectors like semiconductors, AI, and quantum computing, what is the EU positioned? Most analysts agree it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with Europe entering at a clear handicap.

Underlying Factors of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a far deeper and agile network for funding startups. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, a factor that limits the scale of emerging companies.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a bigger population size, is split among 27 separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Views on entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In some EU nations, business failure was historically viewed with stigma, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The US benefits from a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. Europe's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has weakened its ability in pioneering research.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

In spite of these hurdles, one can find causes for optimism. European leaders are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have started to propose serious reform. Key reports on European competitiveness and the single market point to the need for major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable much higher degrees of business-led breakthroughs.

Europe still possesses significant advantages: skilled workforce, excellent schools and universities, and world-class labs. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these foundations have the potential to trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge tech, it can still significantly increase productivity by adopting and adapting advancements from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

Europe now faces a critical moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". To date, the continent's slide in innovation has been steady. But, if it fails to take decisive action to tackle its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
